Recent findings indicate that interleukin-1 (IL-1) and interleukin-6 (IL-6), cytokines secreted by immunologically activated monocytes and macrophages modulate neuroendocrine function. The site of production (centrally, peripherally), the site of action and the physiological significance of IL-1 and IL-6 as “classical hormones” are questioned. © 1991, Gustav Fischer Verlag · Stuttgart · New York.
