Introduction: Prohepcidin is the precursor of hepcidin, a liver-derived peptide involved in iron metabolism by blocking its intestinal absorption and its release by the reticuloendothelial system. Iron overload and inflammation increase hepcidin expression, whereas anemia and hypoxia suppress it.
