Glass aboard in the 17th-18th centuries: a compared perspective from the cases of the frigate Santo António de Taná and the wreck Baía da Horta 1 (BH-001)

No mesmo período cronológico, naufragou também o navio mercante BH-001 no porto da Horta, nos Açores, terminando tragicamente a viagem de comércio triangular que operaria no Atlântico. Neste trabalho discutimos, com base nos contextos referidos, a cultura material vítrea a bordo dos navios nos séculos XVII e XVIII. Nele procuramos perceber as semelhanças e as diferenças da utilização, origem, armazenamento e circulação deste tipo de recipientes, através das quais podemos obter informações quanto à sua importância neste período específico.In 1696, the Portuguese frigate Santo António de Taná wrecked in Mombasa, Kenya, ending its relief mission to Fort Jesus, which was under attack of the Omani Arabs. In the same chronological period, the merchant vessel BH-001 sank near the port of Horta, in the Azores, putting a tragic end to the triangular trade journey that it was operating in the Atlantic. Based on these contexts, this thesis discusses the vitreous material culture aboard the seventeenth and eighteenth-century ships. The purpose was to understand the similarities and differences in the utilization, origin, storage and circulation of this type of containers, through which we can obtain informations concerning their importance in this specific period
