Wild fires as factor of erodibility of the soil: experimental application of prescribed burn techniques and soil erosion plots in Santo Tirso municipality

Dissertação de mestrado em Geografia (área de especialização em Planeamento e Gestão do Território)O solo é um “organismo vivo” e dinâmico que sofre transformações ao longo do tempo, resultado da interação de diversos fatores, de origem natural ou antrópica, alguns dos quais com consequências nefastas, que conduzem frequentemente à sua erosão e degradação. O elevado número de incêndios florestais ocorridos anualmente em Portugal, tem tido como consequência elevados valores de área ardida, facto agravado por um efeito de recorrência cada vez mais frequente, o que implica um agravamento de processos que poderão aumentar os efeitos de erosão e degradação dos solos. Os efeitos de erosão provocados por incêndios florestais são potenciadores de um fator de erodibilidade mais elevado, pela influência que o fogo tem nas prioridades químicas e físicas do solo. As propriedades químicas e físicas do solo podem sofrer alterações em função da intensidade e da severidade do fogo, com consequências no que concerne à presença da qualidade e da quantidade de matéria orgânica, crucial para uma possível regeneração do coberto vegetal. Estes efeitos ocorridos no solo após os incêndios podem levar à remoção dos elementos constituintes do solo, não possibilitando uma regeneração tão rápida do coberto vegetal. Este facto é condicionado pela influência dos processos erosivos na degradação e erosão dos solos, devido à remoção dos nutrientes. Com o objetivo de prevenir a erosão após incêndio, é necessária uma preocupação com a mitigação dos fatores que contribuem para a erosão, minimizando-os através da implementação de medidas, no sentido da mitigação deste risco. Assim, com a realização de uma queima experimental em floresta de Eucalyptus globulus e em matos, procura-se avaliar as perdas e alterações de solo verificadas após incêndio, concretizando recolhas de dados e solo, e aplicando técnicas laboratoriais, procedendo-se a obtenção dos resultados da forma como os efeitos do fogo instigam a erosão do solo. Em suma, pretende-se avaliar se a utilização de técnicas de fogo antes de período crítico de incêndios é favorável para diminuição da carga de combustível, e por sua vez, efetivarem-se como medidas de mitigação dos efeitos do fogo sobre o solo e redução dos incêndios florestais dramáticos.The soil is a dynamic and “living organism” that undergoes transformations over time, which result in the interaction of various factors, both of natural and anthropic origin; some of which with negative consequences which frequently lead to its erosion and degradation. The considerable number of forest fires occurring annually in Portugal has resulted in a large amount of burnt area, a fact aggravated by an ever more frequent recurrence effect. This results in the increase of processes, which could increment the effects of erosion and soil degradation. The consequences of erosion provoked by wildfire increases the probability of erodibility factor, due to the influence the fire has in the chemical and physical priorities of the soil. The chemical and physical properties of the soil can suffer alterations depending on the intensity and severity of the fire, with consequences in relation to the presence of quality and quantity of organic material, which is crucial for a possible regeneration of the ground cover. The consequences to the soil in the aftermath of a forest fire can result in the removal of constituent elements of the soil, which hinders a more rapid regeneration of the ground cover. This fact is conditioned by the influence of erosive processes in the degradation and erosion of soils, due to the removal of nutrients. Seeking to prevent the erosion in the aftermath of a forest fire, what is necessary is a concern with the mitigation of factors that contribute to erosion, minimizing these factors through the implementation of measures aiming to mitigate this risk. Therefore, through prescribed burning in the bush and in a forest of Eucalyptus globulus, we intend to evaluate the loss and alteration of the soil verified in the aftermath of a forest fire, materialized through data and soil collection, and application of laboratorial techniques, so as to collect results of the way the consequences of a wildfire instigate soil erosion. In short, we intend to evaluate if the utilization of fire techniques previous to the critical period of wildfire is favourable to the minimization of the amount of combustible material, and in turn, if these materialize as mitigation measures for the consequences wildfire have on soils and in the overall reduction of dramatic wildfire
