Iberian Spirantization and Continuant Spreading

The spirantization of voiced obstruents in languages of the Iberian Peninsula is examined, especially for Catalan and Spanish. Phonologicai analyses based on the spreading of the feature [continuant] face serious problems and can be mantained only at the cost of empiricai inadequacy or postulation of ad hoc interpretation of principles or additional rules. It is proposed that these inadequacies stem from the phonologicai character of the anaiyses, and that a phonetic treatment of the aitemation gives more satisfactory results.Examinem l'espirantització de les obstruents sonores en les llengües de la Península Ibèrica, especialment pel que fa ai català i al castellà. Les anàlisis fonològiques basades en l'escampament del tret [continu] s'enfronten amb problemes seriosos i es poden mantenir únicament a costa de la inadequació empírica o de la postulació d'interpretacions ad hoc dels principis o de regles addicionals. Proposem que aquestes inadequacions deriven del caràcter fonològic de les anàlisis i que un tractament fonètic dóna resultats més satisfactoris
