Background: People with intellectual disability (ID) frequently use antipsychotic drugs on an off-label base, often for many years. Physicians' decisions to discontinue these drugs not only depend on patient characteristics, like the presence of mental or behavioural disorders, but also on environmental factors, such as inappropriate living circumstances, and on attitudes, knowledge and beliefs of staff, clients and their representatives towards the effects of antipsychotic drug use.
