Se presentan los resultados de las investigaciones en frijol de la unidad de biotecnologia del CIAT. Los estudios fueron principalmente sobre: hibridizacion interespecifica, recombinacion entre reservas geneticas, regeneracion de plantas a partir de cultivo de celulas, transformacion genetica, mapeo de bandas RFLP, marcaje de genes resistentes a BGMV y al gorgojo del frijol, mediciones sobre el contenido nuclear del ADN, mapeo de frijol tepari y aproximaciones bioquimicas para resistencia al gorgojo.
