Vetiver grass

The Vetiver Information Network has produced two volumes of technical information on the use of vetiver grass. Volume 1 contains a description from a farmer in Natal, South Africa of the stabilization of soil on his farm using vetiver, followed by a photo journal report of visits to farms in South Africa, Malawi, Zambia and Zimbabwe all involved in using vetiver in erosion control. There follows a report on experiments relating to salinity tolerance of vetiver, and the Volume concludes with articles reproduced from the Contour magazine on the findings of a group of vetiver users in the Philippines. Volume 2 is divided into five parts which deal with production of quality planting materials; establishment and management of quality vetiver hedges; use of vetiver grass as in situ mulch in rubber plantings; uses of vetiver - case studies; and observations showing the special characteristics of vetiver hedgerows. Although the author of this volume is describing his findings from work done in Malaysia, nevertheless the in-depth range of information he provides on vetiver has application, and is of interest, in all regions where vetiver can be grown.
