The results of many rural development projects aimed at improving the living standards of rural populations in developing countries have often been disappointingly poor. This has largely been because agricultural innovations propagated to increase agricultural productivity were not adopted by small resource-poor farmers as expected. It is now more or less generally accepted that the reason for this is not farmers' ignorance but the inappropriateness of the proposed innovations.
