Tropical Sciences Research Institute

The Tropical Sciences Research Institute (Instituto de Investigação Cientifica Tropical - IICT) is a Portuguese scientific institution supported by the Ministry for Science and Technology. The aims of IICT are to promote scientific and technological research, to contribute to the solution of scientific and technical problems and to train scientific staff. The institute works in cooperation with over forty countries in tropical regions, in particular with the Portuguese-speaking African countries and also Malawi, Tanzania and Zimbabwe. The Institute comprises 500 staff, among which 200 are research fellows and collaborating university professors, all of whom have tropical experience. In addition, IICT has twenty-three specialized research centres integrated into six scientific departments which cover the fields of agrarian science; biological sciences; earth sciences; economic and sociological sciences; and ethnological and ethno-museological sciences. It also possesses a Documentation and Information Centre which is one of the most important in the world for this specific area. IICT is Portugal's major scientific publisher and has published more than 8,000 scientific works, 1,500 other books and reviews and 1,600 geographical, hydrographic, geological and pedological maps.
