Fiji is the first country in the South Pacific to export live reef fish to Asian countries. The live reef fishery programme is part of the commodity development framework programme of the Ministry of Agriculture; it is based in Bua province, on the island of Vanualevu. The live reef fish project is a joint venture between an Australian and a Fijian fish company. Local fishermen will benefit through employment, hiring of their boats for catching fish, and the 30% equity they collectively hold in the company. Fiji's fish industry earns more than $200 million annually and the live reef fish exports will generate an additional $5million to $6million per year.
