In 1999, various African countries have reached a degree of freedom from rinderpest. If a country wants to be declared free from rinderpest it needs to follow the OIE pathway, a set of standards in time, which were adopted by the OIE (Office International des Epizooties) and now form part of the International Animal Health Code. If a country has had no clinical cases of rinderpest for two years, it can declare itself as a country with 'Provisional Freedom from Rinderpest'. Vaccination must be stopped at that stage. If no new cases are found in the following three years, the country reaches the 'Freedom from Rinderpest Disease' stage and two years after that the 'Freedom from Rinderpest Infection' stage.
