The book sets out to explain trees as a fundamental form of life, and to recognise the benefits which can be derived from their presence in terms of production, fertilisation, animal feed, energy, as well as the ecological services they render to the environment ('When trees die, stones begin to grow'). Part 1 examines issues related to the integration of trees into agriculture, including land rights and social and political considerations. Multistorey farming is presented as a 'way of reconciliation' between man and trees. Part 2 focuses on this farming system from both economic and ecological perspectives, with particular emphasis given to productivity, soil fertility and erosion control.
