The impetus for regional integration has increased in recent years. The 2002 launch of negotiations for the Economic Partnership Agreements (EPA) between the EU and ACP countries on a regional rather than a national basis, has helped promote the cause of regional integration, an issue which has long featured on the agenda for discussions on economic development strategies for these countries. The oldest ACP regional economic communities date back more than 30 years.
