The International Coconut Genetic Resources Network (COGENT) was established in 1992 by the International Plant Genetic Resources Institute (IPGRI), on the recommendation of 15 coconut-producing countries and in conjunction with the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) and its Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) and CGIAR donors. COGENT established a coordination unit at IPGRl's Asia, Pacific and Oceania Regional office and its Steering Committee developed its initial programme priorities and projects. The network has developed rapidly over the past two years.
