In most developing countries forests are being steadily or, in some cases, very quickly eroded because of the demands being made upon them. Denuded hill: sides bear witness to the conflicts of interests that are at work. Rural people must have timber to sustain daily life; governments desire the revenue that timber will bring but the international community demands conservation action. How can a balance be established between all these conflicting interests? Whose trees? examines three different projects in Nepal, Sudan and Tanzania which are involving local people in order to ensure that their needs are met. The report looks at past mistakes and provides a fresh perspective on what sustainable forestry must entail if it is to succeed. ...
