Waste heat from coconut shells

Alternative sources of energy renewable fuel supplies and energy efficiency are becoming increasingly important Traditional methods of charcoal production waste approximately 50% of the heat content in the coconut shells and simultaneously generate large volumes of noxious smoke. The Natural Resources Institute (NRI) has just published workshop proceedings on projects to utilize this waste heat usually lost when converting coconut shells into charcoal. The technology described in the publication would make it possible to recover previously wasted energy for use in coconut kernel-processing operations and virtually eliminate smoke emission. The need for fuelwood or oil used by the coconut industry in the manufacture of coconut products is therefore greatly reduced, as is airborne pollution. The publication, which was originally produced as a report on a workshop held in Sri Lanka in September 1989, includes sections on development, field testing, operation, maintenance and financial appraisal.
