Psyllids, Africa beware!

A two-pronged attack on the ravages of the Leucaena psyllid (Heteropsylla cubana) in Asia was formulated at a workshop on the pest held in Bogor, Indonesia, in January 1989, and attended by more than 60 scientists from ten countries. Scientists will carry on their efforts in developing resistant varieties of Leucaena rather than replacing this multipurpose tree; and research will continue on biological control, as well as on population dynamics, and economic and social impact. This regional plan will expand internationally to cover newly infested countries. Leucaena growing nations in Africa must be told of the imminent danger of psyllids, and must be given access to all available information on biological control and resistant varieties.
