Considerable progress can now be made, both in the field and in the drying and storage processes, to improve techniques for selecting and producing traditional seeds. In developing countries, 80% of the seeds used are produced by the farmers themselves. They are thus able to choose those varieties best suited to their production system, climatic and economic conditions as well as local taste preferences. Commercial seeds are often poorly adapted to such factors and, except for cash crops, too expensive to use.
