Traditional seed production

Considerable progress can now be made, both in the field and in the drying and storage processes, to improve techniques for selecting and producing traditional seeds. In developing countries, 80% of the seeds used are produced by the farmers themselves. They are thus able to choose those varieties best suited to their production system, climatic and economic conditions as well as local taste preferences. Commercial seeds are often poorly adapted to such factors and, except for cash crops, too expensive to use. The Department of Tropical Crop Science of Wageningen Agricultural University, which is working in this area, would like to hear from anyone who has experience with traditional seed production techniques in order to establish a working relationship for future research and development activities.
