Successful experiments have been carried out at the University of Ibadan in Nigeria on the use of groundnut and coconut oil for storing maize. When 5 to 10 ml of oil are added per kilo of grain, the maize can be kept for over 2 months. The treatment does not affect the germination of stored maize. This technique does away with the need for costly imported pesticides and is not toxic to man. The products are easy to obtain and use. For further information see: Agriculture.
