alpha-Oxoketenes (RCO-CR'=C=O) undergo a degenerate thermal rearrangement by a 1,3-shift of the acyl substituent R. The same type of rearrangement interconverts imidoylketenes and alpha-oxoketenimines, as well as vinylketenes and acylallenes. Numerous variations of the heteroatoms are possible, and the interconversions of acyl isothiocyanates and thioacyl isocyanates discovered by Goerdeler also belong to this class
