<i>Vanesia</i> (Saint-Jean-Poutge, Gers) : une <i>mutatio</i> aquitaine de l’<i>Itinéraire de Bordeaux à Jérusalem</i>

International audienceThis article reports on the findings of the programmed excavation of the Vanesia relay station, established in the Baïse plain, after which it was named. It is also referred to in the Itinerarium Burdigalense, between Éauze and Auch, their principal towns. After tracing the history of the digs, the article describes the organisation of and evolution in roadside architecture, in particular from the end of the 1st century AD to the beginning of the 5th century. Principal buildings, adjacent courtyards, residential buildings, thermal baths, latrines, and porticos are subjected to a detailed examination. The reference to the site as a mutatio in the Itinerarium Burdigalense raises issues as to the function of this establishment, which was clearly focused on accommodating travellers. These were most probably officials in certain cases, and thus mandated for state transport (the cursus publicus), but primarily private travellers. To end with, the article highlights the existence of an architectural model that has rarely been evidenced by archaeology to date, but that was undeniably present in Gaul, in Aquitaine as well as in Narbonne and Belgium.Cet article rend compte des résultats de la fouille programmée menée sur le relais routier de Vanesia, établi dans la plaine de la Baïse, dont il porte le nom, et mentionné dans l’Itinéraire de Bordeaux à Jérusalem, entre Éauze et Auch (Gers), chefs-lieux de cités. Après avoir présenté l’historique des recherches, l’article décrit l’organisation et l’évolution de l’architecture de l’étape routière, en particulier depuis la fin du Ier s. apr. J. C. jusqu’au début du Ve s. Bâtiment de façade, cours juxtaposées, corps de logis résidentiel, thermes, latrines, portique font l’objet d’un examen détaillé. La mention du site comme mutatio dans l’Itinéraire de Bordeaux à Jérusalem donne matière, ensuite, à s’interroger sur les vocations de l’établissement, naturellement centrées sur l’accueil de voyageurs, vraisemblablement officiels pour certains, et donc mandatés par l’administration du transport d’État, le cursus publicus, mais surtout privés pour l’essentiel. L’article insiste, enfin, sur l’existence d’un modèle architectural, encore peu identifié par l’archéologie, mais indéniablement présent dans les Gaules, tant en Aquitaine qu’en Narbonnaise et en Belgique
