La vitivinicoltura abruzzese nell’Ottocento

Abruzzo’s viticulture in the Nineteenth century had peculiar features in part different from other areas of Southern Italy. In the first half of this century, the mountainous territory, the difficulties of cultivating vineyards and to transport grapes and wine, had greatly restricted the wine production. After the Unification of Italy, the railroad along the Adriatic coast had suddenly approached the Abruzzo viticulture and winemaking to the demand of wine industries from Northern Italy and from transalpine countries. Thus, wide areas in the hinterland and along the coast had rediscovered their vocation to viticulture. The aim of this essay is to trace the economic history of viticulture and winemaking in Abruzzo in the XIX century, reconstructing the development of the local wine and grapes production and highlighting its peculiarities.La vitivinicoltura abruzzese nel corso del XIX secolo ha assunto caratteristiche in parte diverse rispetto ad altre aree del Mezzogiorno. Nella prima metà dell’Ottocento la produzione era stata limitata dal territorio in buona parte montuoso, dalle difficoltà di coltivazione dei vigneti e di trasporto delle uve e del vino. Immediatamente dopo l’Unità la realizzazione dei tracciati ferroviari aveva avvicinato i produttori locali alla domanda che proveniva dalle industrie enologiche dell’Italia settentrionale e dei paesi d’oltralpe. Ampie zone dell’entroterra e della fascia costiera avevano così riscoperto la propria vocazione alla viticoltura. Questo saggio intende ripercorrere la storia della vitivinicoltura abruzzese nel XIX secolo, ricostruendo le fasi dello sviluppo della locale produzione di uva e di vino ed evidenziandone le peculiarità
