This essay, based on the main scientific literature, is divided into two parts. The first part provides a general survey of the educational reforms and institutions created in Italian Peninsula by Napoleon between 1802 and 1814. The second part describes the evolution of school systems – its continuity and discontinuities in relation to Napoleon’s inheritance – in each Italian State during the Restoration (1815-1835). The analyses deals with primary and secondary levels, academic disciplines, teachers, student numbers, and other aspects that concerned the functioning of the schools.
