Oxygenic photosynthesis powers life on Earth by converting solar energy into chemical energy. The primary conversion steps occur in the photosystem II reaction center (PSII RC). The design principles of the PSII RC are not yet fully understood. In particular open questions remain about its electronic structure and charge separation mechanism.
