After a digital photo has been taken by a camera, it can be manipulated to be more appealing. Two ways of doing that are to reduce noise and to increase the saturation. With time and skills in an image manipulating program, this is usually done by hand. In this thesis, automatic image improvement based on artificial neural networks is explored and evaluated qualitatively and quantitatively. A new approach, which builds on an existing method for colorizing gray scale images is presented and its performance compared both to simpler methods and the state of the art in image denoising.
