Hepatitis C is considered a public health problem in Brazil and worldwide, with a high risk of becoming chronic, and complications such as hepatocellular carcinoma and liver cirrhosis. Patients on hemodialysis have a high risk for infection with hepatitis C for many reasons. Studies show high prevalence rates in dialysis units worldwide. In the state of Maranhao there´s no studies showing the profile of HCV in the population of patients with chronic renal failure. The main objective of this study is to evaluate the prevalence of hepatitis C in patients undergoing renal replacement therapy in the city of Imperatriz-Maranhao.
