The presented paper deals with the various possibilities of insulating gases designed as an insulating blend for high voltage distributional switchgear and equipment. The technical superiority of sulfur-hexafluoride is discussed with its environmental disadvantages and limitations. Alternative gases as SF6 replacement are introduced and their usage is discussed. The paper concludes with the system operator’s best-practices with the alternatively insulated equipment
