This study describes the Japanese expedition to Taiwan in 1874. The expedition was a part of Japan’s transformation from a traditional and conservative Asian state to one supporting a programme of modernization, leading it to become a rapidly prosperous state that was newly inspired by Western values. This change, however, caused relations to deteriorate with its other Asian neighbours Korea and China. While the growing conflict with Korea culminated in Japan’s invasion of the Korean Peninsula, the dispute with China was reflected in Japan’s efforts to expand into Taiwan and the Ryukyu Archipelago.
