The aim of this essay is to study how women are portrayed in three different teaching materials in the subject of Swedish, and how these descriptions relate to curricula from three decades. To shed light on this, the study uses Nikolajeva’s theoretical construction of gender stereotypes, which contains with the traits that stereotypically are characteristic of women and men. The analysis is based on close-reading of the textbooks, and the result shows that the selected teaching materials are not entirely gender-equal. The study covers textbooks from three decades and shows that the teaching materials have changed over time and are moving in the right direction.
