This article deals with the Italian experience in the life and work of Sigmunt Freud. It is analyzed not from the perspective of Freud’s psychoanalysis and biography, but in the framework of European Italianism. Drawing on Freud’s psychoanalytical writings, his essays on literature and art as well as his correspondence with Wilhelm Fliess the article examines three aspects of Freud’s interest in Italy: his journeys to Italy, lexical and phonetic references to the Italian language and culture in Freud’s research, and the presence of Italian motifs in his studies of great artists (Leonardo da Vinci), works of art (Michelangelo’s Moses) and literature (Wilhelm Jensen’s Gradiva).
