International audienceThis article examines a phenomenon little noted in the history of early modern English theatre, namely, the transformation of the representation of Alexander on stage into indirect evocations of him as an _exemplum_. With the exception of two dramas composed by William Alexander, earl of Stirling, during the first decade of the 17th century (_Darius_ and _The Alexandrian Tragedy_)--not really an exception, since they were never intended to be acted--the character no longer figures on the English stage after the _Campaspe_ of John Lyly (1584). Nevertheless, he does figure on the imaginative level in plays by Christopher Marlowe (_Tamburlaine_) and Shakespeare (especially _Henry V_ and _Hamlet_). These cases involve rea...
