WhatsApp as a tool for extending nursing care after recovery

Aim: New technologies, in particular social networking technologies, have changed our society. The widespread availability and use of social media make the hypothesis that they can be used in healthcare. Methods: Some volunteers, including patients and caregivers, created a “WhatsApp” group on their smartphone. In order to evaluate expectations and results from this experience, two questionnaires were used to examine three areas of nursing care: relational, linguistic, and technical-professional. Results: From analysis of the questionnaires, the WhatsApp was found to be a valid tool to give continuity of care after discharge. Participants recognised the importance of sharing similar experiences coming from having a disease. Nursing answers were evaluated as complete. The quantitative, qualitative and explorative survey allowed analysis of the relationship between social media's widespread availability and the healthcare environment.
