This articles questions some of the categorizations applied to 19th-century « orientalist » photography. It sets out to demonstrate that complex interrelations between French, British and local early photographic practitioners tend to contradict the merits of these classifications. While obvious differences separate French photographic views of the Orient from their British counterparts, collaborations, the restraints of fieldwork in the area and the structuring of the photographic market from the 1840s to the 1870s participated in making these distinctions partly irrelevant.
