Orientalismes ?

This articles questions some of the categorizations applied to 19th-century « orientalist » photography. It sets out to demonstrate that complex interrelations between French, British and local early photographic practitioners tend to contradict the merits of these classifications. While obvious differences separate French photographic views of the Orient from their British counterparts, collaborations, the restraints of fieldwork in the area and the structuring of the photographic market from the 1840s to the 1870s participated in making these distinctions partly irrelevant. The article underlines as well how crucial applying a reflective regime of historicity to 19th-century photographic representation of the Orient to challenge its contemporary reinventions.Cet article porte sur les catégories parfois utilisées pour étudier la photographie dite « orientaliste » au xixe siècle. Il vise à démontrer que les circulations nombreuses entre praticiens britanniques, français et locaux peuvent permettre de remettre en question la validité de certaines classifications. L’étude souligne que si des différences visibles permettent de distinguer une photographie française de l’Orient de son équivalent britannique, collaborations, contraintes locales et structure du marché photographique des années 1840 à 1870 contribuent à brouiller les frontières. L’article souligne pour finir l’importance d’installer un régime d’historicité critique face aux réinventions contemporaines de ces traces visuelles, en passe de devenir des enjeux de mémoire
