Sub-Saharan Africa continues to record the highest infant mortality rates in the world, and children’s health in Africa stands as a priority for international development programmes. Despite the large presence of African children in health facilities, their words about their experiences of illness and hospital care are rarely reported in the literature. The objective of this thesis, therefore, is to shed light on the perceptions of sick children, their close family members and involved health care professionals in several public paediatric departments in Dakar.
