I.) Plant associated microorganisms can affect the plant`s interaction with herbivores and higher trophic levels. For instance, endophytic fungi infecting aerial plant parts of grass species produce bioactive alkaloids that can negatively affect species from higher trophic levels, indicating a defensive mutualism between the grass and the endophyte. However, beneficial insects can also be negatively affected by the endophyte, which might question the mutualistic effect of endophytic fungi.
