Zu Bedeutung und Funktion von Beleg- und Kompetenzbeispielen im Deutschen Wörterbuch

The following is based on the idea that the function and presentation especially of quoted examples in the DWB as in lexicography in general is in large part determined by traditional lexicographic and non-lexicographic concepts of "example". This requires a methodological approach which is diachronic and hermeneutic instead of an approach which is synchronic and typological, therefore it seems not to be appropriate to base the analysis of the role and function of DWB examples on a typology (of examples) which was created for some modern dictionaries. At first I present the history of five "functional aspects" of examples, then I show how each aspect was treated by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm during the planning of their dictionary. The first functional aspect was taken from the imitatio tradition which has been practiced at least since renaissance dictionaries. The second appears to have conceptual connexion with the (new)platonic image ("Urbild") which is inherent in utterances as well as in all objects of the material world. The third aspect concerning the illustratio tradition was developed by the enlightenment philosophy and it is the only one which was rejected by the Grimms, but became more and more the leading idea behind lexicographic practice in later periods of the DWB. The fourth aspect concerns examples as quotations to support (to prove) the statements made by the word explanations. It traditionally refers to philological principles and dominated esp. the second period of the DWB. According to the fifth functional aspect quotations are the basic material for semantic analysis before becoming examples. This aspect was more or less ignored, but it caused some of the main methodological problems in handling the enormous material after 1912. I then show how Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm's original concept was partially retained and partially changed by later lexicographers, and how in practical work the more or less theoretical, idealistic concepts were transformed and reduced to two main functions: show and prove. Finally some light is shed on the reception of the examples in the DWB, i.e. the way readers have used them and how they can be used today.L'article suivant est fondé sur l'idée que la pratique des citations dans le DWB aussi bien que dans la lexicographie en général est en grande partie déterminée par des concepts lexicographiques et non-lexicographiques traditionels de l'exemple. Cela demande une approche méthodologique développée généalogiquement et herméneutiquement et non pas d'une façon structurelle et systématique comme une typologie d'exemples existant pour des dictionnaires modernes. Cinq aspects fonctionels d'exemples peuvent d'abord être constatés diachroniquement dans le DWB. Je montre ensuite que chacun d'eux était l'objet de discussion des Grimms pendant leur préparations au dictionnaire. Le premier aspect fonctionel est venu de la tradition de l'imitatio, bien connue dès les dictionnaires de l'humanisme. Le deuxième aspect montre une idée qui semble voisine de l'archétype (néo-)platonique ("Urbild") inhérent aussi bien dans les expressions que dans toute les choses. Le troisième aspect nommé selon la tradition de l'illustratio fut développé par la philosophie des lumières et il est le seul qui fut rejeté par les Grimms dans leur projet lexicographique, mais devint de plus en plus l'objectif central de la pratique lexicographique des périodes postérieurs au DWB. Le quatrième aspect se rapporte aux exemples comme citations à l'appui des commentaires sémantiques etc. et leur justification. Traditionellement cet aspect est relatif aux principes philologiques et domine spécialement la deuxième période du DWB. Le cinquième aspect est celui des citations qui fondent le corpus, c.à.d. la base matérielle pour l'analyse sémantique avant de devenir des exemples lexicographiques. Cette fonction a été plus ou moins ignorée dans la méthode lexicographique du DWB et a posé quelques problèmes essentiels à cause du matériel énorme après 1912. Ensuite je montre que le projet original des Grimms a été en partie conservé, en partie changé par leurs successeurs et que dans la pratique les aspects du projet plus ou moins théoretique et idéalistique ont été transformés et réduits à deux fonctions: l'une ostensible et l'autre justificative. Finalement j'esquisse la réception des exemples/citations du DWB en répondant aux questions: Comment les exemples et citations étaient-ils lus par des usagers et comment peut-on les lire aujourd'hui
