This dissertation is an attempt to discern the significance of Ludwig Wittgenstein\u27s later philosophy for the question of the epistemological status of religious belief, as well as a critical examination of selected contemporary philosophers who have addressed this issue from within a Wittgensteinian orientation. It has widely been thought that a fideistic position in religious epistemology follows from the lines of Wittgenstein\u27s later work. I examine and question this assumption. It has also been thought that Wittgensteinian philosophers of religion may be characterized as fideists. I show that this generalization masks interesting differences among the arguments regarding religious epistemology advanced by various Wittgensteinians....
