People's Reception of the Stigma Given to Jessica Kumala Wongso in the Murder of Mirna Salihin in the Television

Jessica impressions on television fairly phenomenal since early 2016. Cyanide coffee case on television is attracting the attention of the public because the examination of the case is quite long. Along with the process of delivering messages from the television media to the viewers, the content of the message will be interpreted differently by each viewer who watches it because of the influence of cultural background, education, socioeconomic status and the condition and condition of viewers while watching. This study intends to describe the public receptions about the stigma given to Jessica Kumala Wongso in the murder of Mirna Salihin in the media. The type of research is descriptive qualitative with the method of reception analysis, in addition to consumer media audiences are also active as a producer of meaning. This research uses the theory of meaning (reception theory) from Stuart Hall which focuses on the process of encoding decoding. The subjects of this research are 10 informants and 6 participants of Focus Group Discussion (FGD) located in Semarang City. The result of the research shows that the difference of informant background with the media and the level of informant education that differ from each other causes the difference in meaning. Informants 1, 4, 5, 10 and FGDs on participants 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 who have the same cultural framework as media and lower secondary education tend to do meaning in accordance with the text offered by the media (dominant reading) they give negative stigma to Jessica by looking at Jessica as the killer of Mirna, while the 2, 3, 6 and 7 informants with upper secondary education who are in social position and cultural experience are different from the media tend to do the reading which is negotiative negotiated reading), the stigma given tends to negotiate and neutral as well. The rest of the informants 8 and 9 who have high school level upwards do a radical reading (oppositional reading), stigma given tend to be positive to see Jessica not guilty in the case of the Mirna murder. In addition to consuming media text audiences as well as producer of meaning that the audience is active in building meaning in accordance with the frame of mind each other. The existence of psychological factors is the openness and bravery of informants and FGD participants in revealing their receptions so as to strengthen their position as an active audience compared to the informants and the closed participants
