International audienceEmoticons allow internet users to show their emotions, or, more generally, their subjective attitude towards stated propositional content that they " punctuate ". Emoticons can apply to different elements of the conversational situation, and to statements produced by the speaker himself, or by his interlocutor. They have several conversational functions, the first and most basic of which is to " anchor " the speaker in the conversational situation : emoticons are an easy way to identify " who's speaking ".
