Acute and chronic eye pain are among the most debilitating and difficult to treat. They particularly affect the cornea, the most innervated and most sensitive tissue of the human body. Corneal innervation comes from primary sensory neurons localized in the trigeminal ganglion (TG) that directly transmit pain information to the trigeminal sensory complex (TSC). However, pathophysiological mechanisms of ocular pain with neurogenic and /or inflammatory type remain poorly understood.
