International audienceThis introductory article has a twofold purpose: it first outlines the current state of the historiography on the early Irish republicanism; it then underlines the new approaches of the papers presented at the conference organised at the IHRF in May 2016, and available now. To achieve this purpose, this introduction starts with an examination of the memory and historiography of the Irish republicanism that emerged in the 1790s.
