Bangladesh has a high level of maternal mortality, corresponding to one of the world's lowest rates of use of skilled birth attendance (12.1%), and a similarly low rate of caesarean births (2.4%). While increasing the proportion of women who deliver with professional medical care is essential to prevent maternal deaths, past work has identified distrust of caesarean procedures in Bangladesh. The reasons behind this distrust can manifest itself in health seeking behaviour around maternal care.
