This dissertation attempts to analyse the diverse reactions in Ireland to the Spanish Civil War, which had a lasting influence on the island's political climate. Faced with the initial unanimous backing of Franco by much of the Catholic Church and the Free State political scene, various anti-Treaty left-wing republicans such as Peadar O'Donnell, Michael O'Flanagan and Frank Ryan went beyond the scepticism of parts of Fianna Fáil and the Irish Times and organised military and humanitarian support for the Spanish Republic.
