Introduction: Autoimmune encephalitis is now recognised as an important cause of encephalitis. On the other hand, encephalitis of unknown aetiology remained a diagnostic and management challenge. We aimed to study the clinical presentation and outcome of encephalitis of different aetiologies. Methods: Immunocompetent patients aged 18 years or above with encephalitis, who were admitted from January 2010 to September 2016, were recruited in this single-centre cohort study. Systemic laboratory testing was utilised to identify the aetiology of the encephalitis. The 6-month outcome was assessed using the Modified Rankin Scale (mRS).
