There is a large amount of evidence indicating that oxidative stress and glycation play a crucial role in aging as well as in neurodegenerative and cardiovascular diseases. Oxidative stress is linked with reactive oxygen species (ROS), whose harmful effects can lead to several pathological conditions like vascular alterations, diabetes complications and inflammation. Moreover, ROS and oxidative stress can directly contribute to glycation reactions with the formation of reactive α-oxoaldehydes and advanced glycation end-products (AGEs).
