The history of our society shows a great interest in education by men of all centuries. There is however a great difference between edcation in the sense of 'training in the young' from the 'Middle-town' of the Lynds and the movement during modern times towards education during leisure. This movement generally known as 'adult education' is particularly considered in this Chapter, although we prefer to speak - as Mr Dumazedier at the International Conference on Adult Education at Elsinore in 1949 - of "éducation populaire", of a 'popular education', a phrase which characterises the nature of a movement which involves the whole people. ...
