ABSTRACT The Cape gannet (Morus capensis) is a seabird species of which the population numbers are decreasing worldwide since the 1960s. We investigated the behavioural mechanisms that potentially underlie these population changes. We studied parental foraging and provisioning behaviour and reproductive success on Malgas (South Africa) and Ichaboe Island (Namibia) during four consecutive breeding seasons. A lower availability of anchovies and sardines (since 1997) reduced the quality of the diet at Malgas, which was associated with reduced chick growth and survival.
