In describing the history of the Home Office (which may be seen as a kind of 'motheroffice'), this thesis has attempted to account for the origin of the modern bureaucracy of government in the Netherlands. Besides, incidental use has been made of theories from the organization-sociology (Parkinson, Jaques, Crozier),w hilst the stagesin to which the German sociologist, Max Weber, divided the process of bureaucracy - culminating in the 'ideal-type' of 'modern bureaucracy' - have been compared to the development actually established. By examinings even hypothesises in which a relation is assumed between the social economical position of public servants and the professionalization of officialdom, particular attention has been paid to possible alterations in the composition of the corps of civil servants. ...
