Transcription of genes coding for yolk proteins

This thesis describes studies on the transcription of two genes coding for yolk proteins. In laying hens, yolk proteins originate from the liver whereas egg-white proteins are synthesized by the oviduct. The synthesis of all these proteins is strictly regulated by the female sex-hormone estradiol. When a rooster, which does not produce this hormone by itself, is injected with estradiol, its liver will produce large amounts of yolk proteins. The induction of these proteins provides an attractive model system to study the regulation of gene expression.
